Week 1

Week 1 the puppies spend their days eating and resting. Their eye and ears are still closed. When puppies are born they cannot see or hear, so they rely on their sense of smell to find their Momma and her milk.

Week 2

This second week of life brings great changes for the puppies. Their ears and eyes, sealed since birth, begin to open, or will open soon. This gives them a new sense of their world. They learn what their mother and other dogs look and sound like, and they begin to expand their own vocabulary from grunts and mews to yelps, whines and barks.

Week 3

In week 3 the puppies are rapidly changing in their physical and sensory development. They are beginning to be less dependent on their momma and learning more about their environment. They are starting to be able to control their need to potty and begin moving away from where they sleep to eliminate.

Weeks 4 and 5

In weeks 4 and 5 puppies are starting to interact more and form attachments.  They are learning by exploring, chasing and playing. They are curious but cautious. During this time they are also starting to learn manners from their mom.  Their momma's milk production begins to slow down and she starts to wean the puppies from nursing and they are introduced to other food.

Due to unexpected and unwelcome visits from Helene and Milton, we have been unable to post pictures for a couple of weeks for Cassie's litter. These puppies have spent the last few weeks away from home due to the hurricanes and mandatory evacuations. They have adapted well to their new, temporary environment, and to the sounds and activity of life in a hotel!

Week 6

Environmental stimulation impacts your puppy's rate of mental development during the next few weeks.   At about 6 1/2 weeks their crate training will begin.  The first two nights, they sleep dorm style two to a crate.  After that, they sleep in their individual crates.  This is the first step to transition them to their new homes.

Week 7

The puppies are continuing to develop - interacting with their siblings, meeting new people, learning to play, and investigating new things are all happening this week.  By this time, they are eating puppy food exclusively.  They now go outside to potty, and usually will tell us when this need arises.  They are transitioning to little dogs from puppies! They typically meet their new families between week 6 and week 7   Learning to interact with strangers is a big step.
